Audubon holds bird seed fundraiser

It’s time to stock up on bird seed for the winter. The Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society (DOAS) will accept bird seed preorders through Oct. 26 to raise funds required to support regional programming through 2025.

Orders may be placed by mail-in form or online at doas.us/2024-bird-seed-sale and picked up by customers Saturday, Nov. 9, at VP Supply Corp, 69 Country Club Road, Oneonta.

A featured item is the locally grown black oil sunflower seed, available in 40 pound bags. The seed is harvested from Edmeston and is a great choice for attracting local songbirds. Purchases of this seed support critical local grassland bird habitats as well as local family farms.

DOAS also offers a large selection of seed blends, nyjer seeds, a woodpecker blend, and suet cakes. The sale features products from Aspen Song by way of Co-operative Feed Dealers (CFD), both of which are located in Conklin. Aspen Song sources and mixes much of their bird seed products from high quality regional suppliers.

Publicity Chairperson Susan O’Handley said the bird seed sale is an important fundraiser for the organization as most events throughout the year are designed to run as break-even or free programs. Proceeds from this sale help provide support for a number of activities, including speaker fees for public programs, maintenance and repairs at the sanctuary, hawkwatch expenses, funds for environmental education programs, and more.

DOAS is also taking orders for bird-friendly coffee, harvested from coffee plantations that are certified by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center to meet rigorous standards for a product that is organic, fair trade, and supports habitat biodiversity.

The sale is open to the public — Audubon Society membership isn’t required to order. The sale runs through Oct. 26 with pickup on Nov. 9 — perfect timing for holiday gifts.
