David J. Carroll

David Carroll, a lifelong resident of Walton, passed away June 5, 2024 at the Norwich Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Norwich, after a long illness. He was born to Harry E. Carroll and Edna Thompson Carroll on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1943. He married Mary Reynolds on July 16, 1966.

David was a proud member of the Class of 1963, which was the first full-year class to graduate from the new Walton Central High School and was a longtime member of the Walton Alumni Association.

He served six years in the Army National Guard as a staff sergeant and was an active member of the Truman C. Tobey Post 32 American Legion, having served in the past as commander and membership chairman.

David began his banking career at Walton Savings & Loan while a senior in high school and rose to the position of vice president and senior lender. He enjoyed serving his customers at the several banks in the area that he worked for.

He served his community as a charter member of the Walton Lions Club; past president of the Delaware Valley Hospital Board of Trustees; holding multiple positions at the First Congregational Church UCC of which he was a member, and past treasurer of the Walton Historical Society.

He loved camping in their travel trailer, stories told with friends around a campfire, family trips to the Outer Bank, North Carolina, reading Civil War history, collecting local postcards and stamps, and talking to strangers wherever he was.

David was most proud of his granddaughter, Sierra, and would tell anyone who would listen about her accomplishments.

David is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Carroll; daughter, Debra (Brian) Caruso of Walton,; granddaughter Sierra (Liam Dowd) Caruso, Albany; brother-in-law Harold (Susan) Reynolds of Ocala, Florida; sister-in-law Wilburna Budine of Walton, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Harry E. Carroll and Edna Carroll Denton; stepmother Laura Budine Carroll; stepmother Virginia Porter Carroll; brothers William Carroll, Harry E. Carroll Jr., and Robert Carroll; stepbrother Everett Budine; and stepsister Rhetha Budine Filer Mauro.

Calling hours will be Saturday, June 22 at Courtney Funeral Home, Townsend Street, Walton, NY from 3 to 6 p.m. Funeral Service with full military Honors will take place at the Hamden Cemetery, Hamden, Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m.
