Emerson Shivers Jr., age 65, of Oneonta, passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022 at Chestnut Park Nursing & Rehab in Oneonta due to cancer, which was diagnosed in August.

Emerson was born April 19, 1957 in Mt. Holly, N.J., the son of Irene (Shover) Shivers and the late Emerson Sr. He lived on the farm in New York from 1960-1967 until his family returned to Medford, N.J.

He was a 1975 graduate of Shawnee High School, Medford, and worked for Atlanta Carting, Gibbsboro, N.J. for a time before moving to Philadelphia for several years, and then Oneonta.

Emerson was a very compassionate person, always ready to help if he could. He had a great sense of humor even though he was plagued by many health issues during his lifetime. Some of his favorite times were spending holidays with his family at the farm.

He is survived by his mother, Irene; his brother Joe and his wife Meg, and their children Meredith and Joshua Shivers. He is also survived by several aunts, an uncle and several cousins.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Treadwell United Methodist Church, 68 Church Street, Treadwell, with Rev. Dr. John Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Emerson’s family would like to thank his many doctors, Bassett Hospital Nurses on floors 5 and 3, as well as the staff at Chestnut Park.

Also a special thank you to Pete and Rosa for their friendship over the years.

Donations is his memory are asked to be made to the American Cancer Society or the Treadwell Fire and Emergency Squad.
